Nottingham Forest Contests Premier League Points Deduction
Having breached the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, Nottingham Forest has lodged an appeal against their four-point deduction. An independent commission found Forest exceeded the permitted £61 million loss threshold by £34.5 million during the 2022-23 period.
This points deduction plunged Forest into the relegation zone, landing them in the 18th place, trailing just a point behind Luton Town. This makes them the second team, following Everton, to be penalised for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
Despite their early plea and cooperation, which reduced the potential six-point deduction to four, Forest conveyed their extreme displeasure with the decision in a recent statement, arguing it raises pressing issues for all clubs aiming to climb the football ladder.
Notably, the league's regulations allow clubs to incur losses up to £105 million across three seasons, translating to £35 million per year. However, Forest's maximum permissible loss was capped at £61 million as they spent two years of the assessment duration in the Championship. The club, who scored a promotion from the second tier in 2022, posted a net transfer expenditure of £142.8 million during the 2022-23 season. This resulted from signing a record-breaking 22 new players and hosting five players on loan in one summer.
The appeal process, as per league statutes, should conclude no later than 24th May, five days post-season finale.
