Philadelphia were edged 2-1 at home by New York City in the final regular-season match and had to settle for third place in the Eastern Conference. They finished the campaign with 55 points from 16 victories, seven draws and 11 defeats with 58 goals scored and 50 conceded. They lost their final two season games and won just one of the last five with a draw and three defeats. The Union were ranked eighth best at home in the league in 2018 with ten wins, four draws and three defeats and outscored the opposition 36-19. They have never won an MLS playoff game, losing all four of their previous contests.

The New York Red Bulls blew their chance of a home playoff game when they were shut out 3-0 in Montreal on the last day of the regular season. It was also the second straight league game they failed to score as they drew 0-0 with DC United in their previous encounter. They placed sixth in the East with 14 wins, six draws and 14 losses with 53 goals for and 51 against. The Red Bulls finished the campaign with just three wins in the last eight games with four losses and one draw. They were ninth best in the league on the road this year with five wins, three draws and nine losses while being outscored 33-24.

Both teams finished the season poorly but Philadelphia is at home and should advance after 90 minutes.

Neither team was a good first half club as they led after 45 minutes a combined 19 times in 68 league games. I expect a draw at the break.

The Red Bulls won 2-0 at home in the league in September with the Union winning 3-2 at home in June. Each team has two wins, draws and losses in the last six encounters including last year's US Open Cup match and five league meetings.
