Jahn Regensburg acquired forward Federico Palacios from Nurnberg before the transfer window closed.

Captain Marc Oliver Kempf returned to action for Stuttgart during the break, playing 30 minutes for the club during the “Three League Cup” in Aspach. Stuttgart bought Philipp Forster from Sandhausen at the end of the transfer window. Forster is a product of Stuttgart’s academy.

Jahn Regensburg headed into the international break in good spirits after busting out for give goals in a 5-0 win over Wehen. The win ended a three-match losing streak, including the club being bounced from DFB Cup by fourth-division club Saarbrucken. Team captain Marco Gruttner got his first, second, and third goals of the season in the Wehen win, which is a good sign for the club considering Gruttner has contributed double-digits in goals each of the last three seasons. Head coach Mersad Selimbegovic will be calling on Gruttner for both goals and his “unbelievable mental will” as Jahn Regensburg host Stuttgart and Hamburg in their next two home matches, with a trip to Dresden between.

Stuttgart has started the season unbeaten in five matches, but head coach Tim Walter wants more from his team, particularly on the road where they’ve settled for a pair of draws in league play. When his club failed to defend their title in the “Three League Cup” during the international break, Walter cited a lack of consistency both in attack and defense, which has also been noted as a concern in the team’s league play. Walter is hoping the return of captain Marc Oliver Kempf will go a long way in addressing the back-end.

The result here will largely depend more on Stuttgart than on Jahn Regensburg. They’ve played well enough on the road to have won both their away matches, but failed to defend a lead in one of them and failed to find the net in the other, despite numerous chances. The Swabians won’t want to see Hamburg’s lead in the league table grow and would certainly like to put more distance between themselves and Sandhausen in the relegation playoff. Anticipate Stuttgart to be fully invested from the start in Jahn Regensburg to get their first road win in the league of the season.

Stuttgart has the talent advantage here to put goals on the board and take command of the match early. If they rally behind the return of their captain while responding to their coach’s challenges, they may make a statement at Jahn Regensburg. I like Stuttgart to put a full-on assault on their host’s goal and find the back of the net early to get things rolling.

Jahn Regensburg and Stuttgart have not played  since 1977.
