Tim Kleindienst has transferred to Heidenheim from Freiburg. The forward spent the 2016-17 season in Heidenheim on loan from the Bundesliga club, scoring seven goals in that campaign. Heidenheim also acquired midfielder Konstantin Kerschbaumer from Ingolastadt.

Defensive midfielder Philipp Sander was forced from Holstein Kiel’s match at St. Pauli by injury. The club expects him to be unavailable for several weeks.

Heidenheim managed to overturn a two-goal deficit in the final eight minutes at Nurnberg to earn a draw and thus avoid a three-match losing streak before the international break. While Frank Schmidt may take heart in his team fighting back to avoid that loss, he has to be concerned about the fact his team have conceded two goals in each of the last four league matches. Getting their first home victory of the season would do a lot to boost morale and confidence at Heidenheim.

Holstein Kiel had higher expectations for the start of this season than the five points they have from their first five matches. Despite losing four of their final five matches last season, the Storks had finished sixth and scored more goals than all but three other clubs; hopes were high that the club could again stay close to the promotion fight and maybe even play a role in it. They have managed to come from behind after conceding first in all three of their home matches, but with just five goals scored to date, second fewest in the division, the offensive production is nowhere near last season’s production. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth decried Andre Schubert’s team as lacking “readiness and spirit,” two qualities that traditionally fall on the head coach.

Both teams will be looking for this match to set the tone for the return from the international break.

Neither team has scored first in a league match this season. With so much at stake for two clubs looking to set a new course after the international break, you can expect a very cautious approach by both clubs, at least until someone scores. Expect a defensive battle Saturday.

Heidenheim and Holstein Kiel have met just four times in 2. Bundesliga play, with Holstein Kiel holding the only two victories in the series (two draws). Both matches last season ended as draws.
