Stuttgart had their eight-match unbeaten run in league play ended by Greuther Furth Saturday. The 2-0 loss was the first time Stuttgart was kept off the scoreboard in their six league matches under Pellegrino Matarazzo. It was also just the second time Stuttgart failed to post a clean sheet under their new trainer. Stuttgart leads the 2. Bundesliga with 30 points from 12 home matches.

Bielefeld posted their second-consecutive 1-0 victory, downing visiting Wehen last Sunday. It was Bielefeld’s fifth win in six matches since the winter break, as well as their fifth clean sheet of the new year. With the four teams closest to them in the table all losing, Uwe Neuhaus’ crew strengthened their grip on first place in the 2. Bundesliga, a position they have held for ten consecutive matchdays. Bielefeld is the league’s best road team, having taken a whopping 27 points from their 12 road trips.

A win for Bielefeld would give them a nine-point lead on second place, boosting their already favorable odds for promotion to the Bundesliga. Stuttgart will be motivated to keep Bielefeld close while also maintaining their advantage over third-place Hamburg. Take the league’s best home team to edge out the league’s best road team for a win.

Both of these clubs have shown they can score plenty, being two of the four clubs to have 40 goals to their credit so far this season. However, both Bielefeld and Stuttgart have risen to the top two in the table based largely on their strong defensive performances of late. A goal-fest is possible, but expect cautious approaches to set the pace.

Stuttgart has won all three of their 2. Bundesliga meetings with Bielefeld, including last September’s 1-0 victory at the Bielefelder Alm.
