MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: AWAY WIN

Vasco da Gama were involved a local derby against Botafogo in the league last weekend and ended up defeated 1-0 away from home. Manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s side have been playing poorly since the start of the season and were beaten even though they created several chances throughout the league game. Quantity does not mean quality though, as not a single one of Vasco da Gama’s 17 shots threatened their opponents. The visitors conceded the winner in the 58th minute and didn’t even put up a fight in the final stage of the league contest. With only three points from seven league matches, they are unsurprisingly rock-bottom in the league table and are looking more hopeless week after week.

Internacional hosted strugglers Avai in their round seven league match and clinched a solid 2-0 win. It took some time for them to open the scoring as the first half was slow-paced, but they started off the second half with tenacity and Jose Paolo Guerrero notched the opener in the 62nd minute. Midfielder Edenilson doubled their lead after a smart Guilherme Parede assist in the 77th minute - and that was enough to see them jumping into fifth place with their fourth league win of the campaign. They have now reached 13 points and are unbeaten in their last four league games (three wins, one draw).

A league win seems out of reach for Vasco da Gama, especially when playing against top-half sides such as Internacional. The visitors have lost just one of their last six league matches (four wins, one draw), so their form has been brilliant. I don’t think they will lose their grip against the worst placed team in the league. It is an away league win for me.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD – AWAY WIN

Internacional have not only scored first in four out of their seven league games so far, but they have also headed into the dressing room with a lead in five of their last seven league meetings against Vasco da Gama. I expect to see the away side to be ahead after 45 minutes here, too.

HEAD TO HEAD

Vasco da Gama managed to hold onto a 1-1 draw against Internacional at home in league action last season, but they were thrashed 3-1 when they travelled to Porto Alegre in the league four months earlier.
