Atsushi Kawata scored twice and Taiki Tamukai scored the other in Vortis's 3-0 home win over Renofa Yamaguchi last weekend in their final matchday of the 2019 J2 season proper. This win ensured they moved into 4th place and took home advantage in the 1st round of the play-offs. The only time they have lost in 15 league games was at home to promoted FC Yokohama in early November, and they have won 11 of their last 15. Going back to their loss before that, it was against... Ventforet Kofu! At home. Back in early August.

Yutaka Soneda scored a goal in each half last weekend as Ventforet comfortably won 2-0 at home to FC Ryukyu, to end their J2 season proper with a win and move into 5th place in J2, and into this play-off game. They had four league wins running to end their J2 season but the opposition was – in the main – struggling, lower table teams and they have not been that impressive. In the back of their minds they will feel they have a psychological advantage of having beaten Vortis away from home earlier this season.

The fact that Ventforet need to win to progress means they must open up the game and Vortis will sit back and wait patiently for chances and counter-attacks, and they are adept at scoring chances that come their way. The home team should do enough to win this, although a draw is good enough.

Vortis have 19 goals in their last seven league matches and have conceded six. Ventforet will have nothing to lose in attacking from the start – they must win. So open space at both ends today.

In J2 matches between these two teams this season each team won their away game, and that is exactly what happened last season, also.
