Monterrey were thrashed 5-1 away against Toluca in the league last weekend. The visitors were dominated throughout and conceded goals to William Fernando da Silva, Alexis Canelo, Alan Medina and a double to Felipe Pardo. Despite the loss, Monterrey remain at third place in the league table, nine points behind league leaders Club Leon. Diego Alonso’s side will almost certainly make the playoffs this term, although they will be keen to close their campaign with a strong run of form to ensure that they qualify as one of the top seeds. Monterrey won 5-2 away against MLS side Sporting Kansas City in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final tie in midweek. Having won 10-2 on aggregate, they have now reached the final of the competition.

Santos Laguna took a point from a goalless draw at home against Pachuca last weekend, despite playing most of the league match with ten men after Jesus Alberto Angulo was sent off in the 40th minute. The hosts had less possession and shots on target than their opponents. However, they defended well and managed to escape with a point. Santos Laguna have now slipped to 12th place in the league table. They currently have a meagre haul of 16 points from their first 13 league games. Although only five points separate them from the top eight, the club will need a strong run of form if they are to make the playoffs this season. Santos Laguna won 3-2 at home against Tigres UANL in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final tie in midweek. Having lost 5-3 on aggregate, they have now been knocked out of the competition.

Given their current form, Monterrey should be regarded as the favourites in this league fixture. The club have only lost twice in league action this season, compared to five league losses for Santos Laguna. Despite a disappointing showing against Toluca, Alonso’s men remain in the top three and will enter this league match with the confidence to take the win.

Monterrey have netted the opener in nine of their 13 matches in the league this term. On the other hand, Santos Laguna have conceded the opening goal in nine of their 13 league games this season. Given those facts, a Monterrey opener would come as no surprise in this league contest.

Both sides are evenly-matched over their past four league and playoff meetings, with two wins each. The visitors claimed a 2-0 win over Santos Laguna when the teams met in the league in December last year.
