Hamburg is out of the top three in the 2. Bundesliga table for the first time since the first matchday of the season. Wing player Khaled Narey returned from a knee injury to the Hamburg bench, but did not enter their 2-1 loss at Heidenheim.

Central defender Gerrit Nauber suffered a shoulder separation during Sandhausen’s 1-0 loss to Dresden and had to be substituted early in the second half. Defensive midfielder Erik Zenga made his first appearance since injuring his knee last fall and was cautioned twice in a nine-minute appearance in the loss; he will be suspended for Sunday’s season finale.

Doubtful: None

Injured/unavailable: Ewerton (knee)

Suspended: Erik Zenga

Injured/unavailable: Markus Karl (knee), Gerrit Nauber (shoulder)

Hamburg had a one-goal lead heading into the final ten minutes of play against fourth-place Heidenheim Sunday, needing only a draw to stay third in the table and give themselves at least a shot at second place. A Jordan Beyer own-goal in the 80th minute set the stage for a game-winner in the fifth minute of added time that put Hamburg a point behind Heidenheim into fourth place, needing help to avoid a third-consecutive season in the 2. Bundesliga.

Trainer Uwe Koschinat continued using a three-man back line Sunday against Dresden, but was forced to make several changes to his starting squad due to injuries. The end result was a 1-0 loss to last-place Dresden. The hosts had several big chances early in the match and carried most of the play, but could not find the opening goal. Even after Dresden went to ten men due to a red card, the match remained a deadlock. Erik Zenga saw two yellow cards in the 89th minute, both for dissent, putting both sides at ten players. Three minutes into added time, the game-winner goal was conceded, sending Sandhausen to their second-consecutive loss.

With nothing to play for, Sandhausen didn’t have the same spirit Sunday that helped them go on a five-match unbeaten run to escape the threat of relegation. With additional injuries heading to this match and a talented opponent in desperate need of a win, it’s tough to see how Sandhausen hangs with Hamburg in this match. And while Hamburg has been disappointing in crucial spots since the league resumed play, they should at least give themselves a chance with a win here.

Sandhausen has scored just one goal over their last three matches and will have little incentive to push the matter in Hamburg.

December’s 1-1 was the first time Sandhausen had managed a point from Hamburg in three all-time meetings, all in the 2. Bundesliga.
