Having won six and drawn one of their last seven league fixtures, Cologne are without a doubt the in-form side in Germany’s second tier. The side have been leading the table for the past six rounds and are enjoying a seven-point lead over Hamburg in second after unexpectedly drawing 4-4 away at relegation candidates Duisburg in midweek. With their last league defeat dating back to mid-February when they lost 3-2 away at Paderborn, they are the team to beat at the moment and only a few steps away from being promoted to the top flight.

Hamburg booked their place in the quarter-finals of the German cup when beating Paderborn 2-0 away earlier this month, but they followed that up with a disappointing 2-1 home league defeat over relegation-threatened Magdeburg in their most recent outing earlier this week. Sitting in second, Hamburg still have plenty of work to do in the race for automatic promotion to the top flight as they are only three points ahead of Union Berlin in third. The north German outfit have endured a lot of problems in league action of late, losing two and drawing one of their last three league fixtures.

This is without a doubt this weekend’s standout game in Germany’s second division, with both sides looking for a win. Cologne have been on a remarkable run of late, but this is a golden opportunity for Hamburg to reduce the table toppers’ lead. My money is going on the draw.

Cologne have scored the opening goal in three of their last four home league outings. I think they will be the first team on the scoresheet again.

The teams have met only once in league action in the second tier, with Hamburg beating Cologne 1-0 at home earlier this season. They both plied their trade in the top flight last term, with each team winning their away league fixture.
